Bill Wilkman gives some suggestions on how to install an Austin A40 Devon windscreen
23rd December 2006
1.Do not try to replace a windshield with new rubber seal without help!:o( Fortunately, all but one of the scratches came out with some aggressive buffing. The one that did not come out completely is greatly diminished.
2.Instead of dish soap, I used rubber grease. This is special grease that's designed especially to lubricate rubber.I smeared a bunch of this on the inside of the rubber seal so it would slide easily against the car body to which it seals. As for its long-term effectiveness, only time will tell!
3.I surrounded the windshield opening in the car body with several layers of masking tape to safeguard it from any more scratches.I also placed two layers of terry cloth towels over the bonnet and cowl area to protect that area from scratches.
4.Withmy wife and I on opposite sides of the car, I slipped the retaining stud in the top of the windshield frame into its slot in the car body.
5.Once this retaining stud is in place, push up firmly on the windshield to get it well seated.(This is how I scratched the car when trying the solo installation.:o(
6.Now, you and your assistant need to use your index finger to force the seal up and over the car body, working from the top centre around the perimeter of the windshield.
7.When you've made it most of the way around the windshield, press the lower area in and seat the lower stud. Now, move the windshield down to get this stud firmly in place.
8.When the lower stud is in place, there will likely be areas where the robber seal is still not over the car body, namely in the corners. The seal can be pushed out and into place from the inside of the car.
9.Now, with your assistant pushing in on the windshield on each side, install the four bolts that hold the windshield in place. There is very little room to do this and you will likely have to bend the metal flange that surrounds the door to make more room.Even then, it will be a real struggle.Prayer, rather than curses is suggested.;o)
